The heaviness in my heart was sadness and frustration at a situation beyond my ability to make sense of, or reconcile its impact on the future of mother earth. Fortunately for me, that afternoon I hosted a conference call with the Life Mastery Programs Associate Teachers and shared with them the deep emotions that were surfacing.

An insightful conversation ensued, one that helped me shift my interpretation of how I might better respond. Our sharing also helped me, in a small way, to move into a personal action here on the Pacific coast, as I connected with the larger intention of healing that many people around the globe, in their heartfelt concern, are contributing to.

Down on Santa Monica beach the next morning, the air was clear and the sound of the waves seemed to wash me of the burden I was carrying.  I became immersed in the sound, smell and energy of the ocean’s power, and transported into a place where I felt one with the water. I reached into the ocean, and whispered softly of my love and gratitude for this grand body of water and all the waters that flow across the planet. Instantly I felt my heart opening fully, and I envisioned my little prayer moving through the molecules of the Pacific around the Cape Horn, up into the Atlantic and eventually streaming into the Gulf of Mexico.

When an event of this proportion ocurrs, it touches each and everyone of us. It’s important to allow our true feelings to be expressed, as we are witness to this tragic occurrence. Likely the waters of the Gulf and the habitats of both the humans and the animal kingdom, will never be as they were. Things are changed forever. There is a valid reason to feel the real emotions that arise within us… sadness, anger, frustration and concern. As the emotions surface, we can choose to allow them to move through our bodies…I gave some of my sadness to the Pacific and to the wind that accompanied each of the waves that day.

I watch CNN; the day is number 72 and the oil continues to flow. I feel the emotion rise up in my chest and I remind myself, “What is the energy and the message I want to be contributing and sending out in this moment?” I notice that there is that vibration of hopelessness that is present and I acknowledge it by breathing into it, giving it passage through my body on my exhale. Then, once I am more present to what I am feeling, I can better answer my question and make a new choice.

Because whatever we think and feel moves out from us and into our environment, we can choose with this monumental opportunity to become even more aware of what our response is. What we hold in our emotional bodies does have an effect not only how we feel but also the energy seeps out into our environment and our interactions with each other. That is why it so imperative that we understand the effect of our both our thinking  and the quality of our emotions.

Maybe not so coincidently, the esteemed Japanese scientist, Dr. Emoto, through scientific experiments proved that our thoughts affect the crystalline structure of water. Negative words and thoughts resulted in the water turning dull and the crystals were misshapen. While positive thoughts, like gratitude, hope, and faith created brilliant and symmetrical, crystals. Now more than ever it is clear that water everywhere could benefit from our increased awareness of the intentions we are holding in our thoughts, especially as we put our attention on the Gulf of Mexico.

So, I offer a suggestion … visit a body of water nearby … a river, stream, ocean or even a sculptural fountain … and send the message you most want to convey to the most life sustaining substance on earth, water.

Dr Emoto offered a simple prayer, one that you can repeat over and over again (even in your morning shower) and could help you in moving through your hopeless feelings, to a more beneficial response,” I send the energy of love and gratitude to the water and all the living creatures in the Gulf of Mexico and its surroundings. To the whales, dolphins, pelicans, fish, shellfish, planktons, corals, algae and all living creatures…I am sorry. Please forgive me.  Thank you.  I love you.” 

Scientific studies have proven that the minimum number of people required to shift consciousness is the square root of 1% of a population.*  Curious about how many people that would be in our town (population 20,000), I grabbed a calculator. Go ahead, take a guess…

Only 14, the size of our bi-weekly meditation group. Wow. That’s doable and impressive. On our planet of 6 billion people, we need 8,000 people to initiate a change. And in a typical yoga class or workshop with 25 people, only 0.5 of a person is required.

On some days, my heart feels heavy with all the challenges we face. It can feel overwhelming to envision a radical shift for the planet (or even our own lives). Yet with this new information, it feels achievable. In fact, I’m even more inspired to take action from my heart when I know that with just a few friends, our larger Life Mastery Programs community, or 7,999 others we can create a quantum shift for all of us.

Last month, Jamie and I initiated The Giving Hearts Telecall with the intent of restoring, rejuvenating, and reinvigorating ourselves so that we have an abundance of energy to send out into our world. We had 6 of us on the call. Is that a meager handful or enough to make a difference? Well, one of the participants called in from Ireland, so it was truly a global call. The energy was palpable. I have no doubt it made an impact in each of our lives, as well as the world beyond us.

In June 2000, when “green” was not the talk of the town, my husband, John and I started a business called Synergy Environmental. We developed the market and obtained all the approvals for the use of a product called BioMatrix.  This is a product that biodegrades oil, breaking it down to its natural components (H2O, CO2 and fatty acids), none of which are toxic or hazardous to the environment.  We have focused a lot of time and energy on educating people, including children in schools on alternative ways to handle oil and chemical spills, by using this product.  We started this business because of an awareness that we had of the need to make some changes with the environment. BioMatrix is created from sphagnum peat moss, found above the 49^th parallel of the earth.  It is a simple and abundant material found in Mother Earth herself. It can be used to clean up the damage of the oil on the wetlands. But it seems the powers that be still choose to turn a blind eye to the simple solution.  How indicative is that of how we lead our lives? Why? Because we are afraid to let go of the old ways: in our lives it is called beliefs, stories, etc. In the world at large it is called polypropylene, surfactants, kitty litter “clay” products, etc.  These products represent what doesn’t work. They are manufactured by a chemical process that can result in long term side effects that are harmful to the fragile ocean environs, where as, BioMatrix is an all natural product does not.

I continue to “hold that space” for a solution to the Gulf crisis that best serves Mother Earth.  My desire has been to be able to reflect back to Mother Earth the love and joy she reflects to me, from a clean and clear space. This has never been about saving the environment, for she is perfect the way she is.  It has been about a partnership, a romance, wherein she has been willing to be that mirror for me to see myself, in so many ways, they are unmentionable at this point.

It will take more than one system, product or solution to control and clean up the damage of this spill. We are confident we have one of solutions in BioMatrix and we look forward to collaborating with others who have the desire and means to clean up this spill.  Look at what happened with the Exxon Valdez.  Here we are over 21 years later, and we are still being impacted by that spill in so many ways.  We cannot afford to not do everything we can. Especially in the fragile state that Mother Earth is now in.  

We are at a point where Mother Earth is clearly making a cry for help. I have a strong hearts desire that I can no longer ignore to respond to this cry to help by getting our product out there.  

It is time for “CHANGE”.  We need new solutions for old problems. The situation in the Gulf calls for new ways of responding – not the same old same old.  I don’t have the solution for every aspect of this disaster, but I do have the solution for a piece of it, and I know there is someone out there on this same team committed to “CHANGE” that has another and yet another.  It is time for humanity to stand up and be accountable for what is showing up, and DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.  That is what this spill is about.  No more sitting back and just getting angry, pointing a finger, being a victim.  We need to play bigger than that.  Mother Earth is willing to be that reflection for us to see that once again Watch what I mean, You Tube Rachel Maddow

John and I have now gone into passionate action with this intention; grounded in a desire to step up, take responsibility for what is showing up in our world. I see that all of it has the potential to mirror what is inside of us. In some ways we created it, maybe not the oversight that caused the disaster to happen but our dependency on oil and our inability to shift our life styles. If we all just stopped, embraced ourselves, stopped pointing a finger, and no longer went into our own corners to hide and protect ourselves but rather sought cooperative ways to work together to solve our environmental problems, miracles could happen.

Life inspires us to birth Love into manifestation. Without each one of us choosing a more loving response, a more trusting response to what we encounter in our daily lives, it doesn’t happen. There are many ways to bring love into manifestation and tap deeper the well of life that is within; and one is choosing to trust.

When we have trust in ourselves, even when we aren’t clear about our direction, or when faced with uncertainty, we create a channel for life energy to flow less impeded. Trusting oneself is really choosing to open our heart to what we don’t know, or to what scares us. 

Trusting is not a concept. It is a feeling within the body. It originates in the heart and when we feel it, we move beyond the idea of what trust is and instead actualize it, and live it. This feels expansive, and opens the gate of the heart to flow more freely.

Imagine that right within our heart lives the ability to meet the changes that might challenge us. Rather than collapsing into doubt or cynicism, which is just one way fear disguises itself, we rise to meet it. Notice the difference in the energy of the words: meet vs. collapse. When we meet a challenge with trust we increase our ability to respond to life, and thus open up even more energy to sustain our lives, our expressions and creations. Trusting has the ability to stabilize us when an insecure feeling bubbles up inside of us.

The energy of trust is like a magnet – the more you have, the more you attract. Imagine how it would feel to really be able to stand in trusting your heart and what it feels? Doubt would no longer have a hold over you. You could move forward with more ease. Trust that you already have what it takes to make your dreams reality. Trust that you can transform your life in the ways that your heart and soul calls.

Please take a moment and bring your attention to your heart for a few breaths? Allow yourself to feel that each breath supports the thought, “I trust this heart of mine. I trust that I am connected to Life.” Opening to trust life itself is accessible, right here, in this breath and your next. Watch what happens as you repeat this and connect to the feeling of trust inside each time you feel tense or anxious.

Choosing to trust life creates an energetic stance in the world that touches everything you touch, everything you see, and everyone you meet. Trusting life to bring you what you need changes everything. It fills you with energy to create your beloved projects, relationships, and professions. Even the often encountered conundrum of the process of transforming ourselves into more authentic beings, is fed and gently supported by choosing to trust life. Trust life and feel the difference!

The greater world has been penetrating my consciousness lately in a most visceral way.

Volcanoes in Iceland. Earthquakes in Haiti, Peru, California, China, Tibet. I can feel our Mother Earth rumbling, releasing energy and stress.

Lack of clean water in Africa. Food banks in LA.  Books needed to increase literacy in Appalachia. The demands out there are numerous. Tears fall down my cheeks as I imagine being a mother with any one of those needs.

Over the past year, like so many others, our income has decreased. While it has made a moderate impact on our lifestyle, we’ve mostly felt the contraction in our lives as a form of deflation. We lost a little faith in our power to create our dreams.

And yet when I turn on my tap, clean clear water flows out abundantly.

Our family has plenty of food to eat. Anything we can long for can usually be bought from our local Whole Foods or one of the many nearby restaurants.

Did you know that lower income communities have 1 book per 300 homes? Bodhi, our three year old, has nearly 300 books on his shelves and can access thousands more at our local library.

When I enter a space of lack – what I don’t have – or limitation – what I’m not seemingly capable of manifesting right now, my energy tightens. My ability to adopt a broader vision and see beyond my own challenges shrinks.

Have you also been experiencing this kind of constriction?

Yet as soon as I lift my head up and take a look around me, I see abundance everywhere. In the trees that are blossoming. In the friend who shares childcare with me. In the extra bit of money that unexpectedly appears.

As soon as I have an ounce of gratitude for the many moments I am blessed to spend with a healthy husband and child, I start to expand. I open to life, to possibility.

Any time I give from my heart, I receive so much in return. We all have heard the biblical expression “It’s better to give than to receive.” Scientists are now proving why this is so. They’ve discovered that our limbic brains cannot distinguish time and space, giver or receiver. So when we give of ourselves, our limbic brain also receives what we have given.

So when we give, we are also receiving. Now we are being called to give from our hearts.

My husband Jamie and I have a long-standing dream to be philanthropists. That sounds so lofty yet we have every intent of making it so.

For us, it starts with taking responsibility for how we energetically contribute to the world. Are we sending out fear, constriction, or frustration? Can we contribute acceptance, expansion, kind words, and infinite possibility?

Can we be financially responsible for ourselves and also make a conscious choice to help others?

Can we share some of our fortune and abundance; whether it’s through a blog, a free class, a donation, or volunteering our time?

Over the past three years Jamie & I have been focused on raising our toddler, running two businesses, writing books, and living a full life. Now we’re ready to lift our heads up once again and send out energy, into our bodies, into our own dream, and into the world at large.

I have no doubt that in the process we will reinvigorate the power to create our dreams – only this time our dream will be even more expansive. It includes not just our own family, or even our own spiritual community, but also the greater world at large.

Ahhhhh.   Every contraction brings an opportunity to see the stories I have created in my emotional memory with great clarity.  Nothings like a good contraction to bring old, unconscious fear to awareness.  Those parts of us scream if the contraction is tight enough.  All the old anger, blaming, fear, hurt and judgment rise to the surface.  All the feelings we resist and hold hostage and deny, rush out of their closets to get a breath of air.  It’s about being a human blessed with a highly developed survival-based fear brain embedded in a brain wired to tell stories.   

I now have a choice.  It is a choice to experience the flow that I am by allowing the energy of emotion to move through the blockades my mind has constructed.  I can gently encourage those parts I’ve denied to come to the surface because I have invited them.  I can create an open field that welcomes the dialog so I am no longer run over by emotions escaping a locked closet.  By attending to those inner contractions from the point of view of acceptance instead of belief or of denial, those contractions begin to transform themselves.  The beauty is that giving those emotions my full acceptance allows a miracle to happen.  When that energy flows, it jump-starts feelings of freedom, creativity, compassion and joy.  So, as Miguel’s fifth agreement states, “Be skeptical, but learn to listen.”  You just might hear the thread of the story that opens you to the fear beneath the anger, the hurt beneath the blaming, the part of you that needs to be seen, not believed, but seen nakedly and honestly so that forgiveness, release and flow can happen.  Once my internal flow begins, my external flow follows.  Once again, I am connected to my whole self and therefore connected to my whole life and the feeling of expansion is the result.

A contraction is an opportunity to notice its source of creation.  How can we ever be separate from the life flow that is what we are?  We never can be but we can certainly perceive and then feel that way.  It is possible to see the expansions and the contractions as a love letter.  It is possible to appreciate the perfection of a system that allows such healing and expansion to happen.  If we say so.

Everything required to create anything in your life is already here. If something is “missing” you need to raise your energy level to the energy of what you desire. This applies whether you desire more money, more free time, better employees, a better relationship, more ease or peace. Your greatest resource is your energy level. Do you pay attention to it? You manage other resources: money, clients, suppliers, gas in your car. Even if you have other great resources, if your energy is low, it is challenging to get through a day, let alone create big changes in your life. You are up to big things and ready to create a new level of prosperity for yourself. To attract anything “more” than what is in your life today requires increasing your energy. The energy I refer to is a combination of your physical energy and your emotional energy. You are more in control of your energy than you think. You are responsible for your energy level – no one else is.

Your energy follows your attention, and what you give attention to increases. As you pay attention to your energy level, you naturally feel your energy rise. This extra energy needs a place to go. Either you direct it with your attention or it will flow back to old beliefs and habits that may not be in the direction you want to go. How do you direct your energy with your attention?
