Emotional Awareness: What Have You Been Emotionally Eating?
- May 26, 2009
It has been said that “you are what you eat” and this is especially true when it comes to your emotional diet. Perhaps you have never thought about a diet in terms of an emotional one. It may seem enough of a challenge to just be concerned with what foods you are putting into your mouth, not to mention the possibility of paying attention to another equally important kind of diet. You are consuming emotional energy all the time even though you may not realize it. In other words, you are eating energy all time. This kind of eating may not show up as calories and nutrients in your body, but show up in your body it does!
Think of emotion as energy in motion. That energy is present everywhere you go where there is human interaction. And when you get caught up in your emotions and those of the people around you, you are eating the quality of energy the emotion is conveying. Many of you know that eating organic or minimally processed food is what is best for your body. What exactly is best for your emotional body and its diet? Just as with the food you put into your mouth, the same is true with emotional food - “you are what you eat.” Currently the American (if not most of the world’s) emotional diet is filled with “junk food.” Emotional “junk food” is the emotions that are the result of our old fear-based belief structure and all the thoughts, stories and internal dialogue that this program creates in your mind. If emotions are the energy that drives the human dream, then we can see clearly what the most prevalent emotions are - all you have to do is turn on your TV for the evening news. The content of the news has a very particular emotional flavor, and all the food it produces reflects the content of the stories reported.
Every movie or TV show you watch is constantly creating different emotional energies or messages within the content of the story. Even while reading a newspaper, magazine or a novel you will produce an emotional response to the content, even though it may be undetectable on the surface. If you observe people conversing, there is an emotional component to the topic they are talking about. All of the responses to your life experiences, from the very subtle to the very powerful emotional outbursts, resonate in your physical body as sensation and show up in your body physically.
Perhaps it is becoming clear that the quality of your emotional diet determines the quality of your life. The programmed mind and all of the interpretations you make daily are what create the emotional or feeling response within you and in all the people that you interact with. You are constantly eating emotions but what are the quality of the emotions you are eating? In your own mind, your interpretations and the thoughts and stories that you create in your internal conversations, create a corresponding emotional response. This is what becomes the basis of your emotional diet. When you practice awareness, you are putting your attention on the content of your internal dialogue and assessing whether it contributes to your emotional well-being or if the content contains beliefs that diminish your self worth and intrinsic value. You are also becoming more willing to experience the feeling in your body because there is valuable information in what your body is telling you. In your practice of mastering awareness, when you no longer support or agree with false beliefs in your mind, then right away, a formerly unhealthy emotional diet begins to transform and you will notice this in the way you feel.
When you can really see how your emotions are created and you take responsibility for what you are “feeding on” then you empower yourself to make long lasting changes in your feeling body. When those old reactions that feel as though you have been blind-sided without knowing how you got there, you can see them as learning opportunities. The old response was the question, “How can I control my emotions?” With more awareness, the more appropriate question is, “How can I monitor the beliefs and thoughts created in my mind and put choice into action?” The choice is always to believe what you hear within your own mind - or to not believe yourself (or anyone else). By challenging your beliefs about yourself and the personal stories that are filled with self-judgment, and realizing that making the choice of more self acceptance, you can manifest a change your emotional diet and start eating emotional food that is actually good for you.
Emotional Awareness: The Power of Practicing Acceptance
- May 22, 2009
We all seek the home that is calling us from within and to answer that call, the call of your soul, can present some unique challenges. Your individual response to this dynamic purpose places you exactly where you need to be - within the possibility of acquiring clear self reflection from the circumstances of your current life. The experiences you are having now and what is showing up in your life are the real gifts for you. For if you are having the experience at this time, then it must be the one that is best suited to bring to your attention what you are now ready to see in your life. These are the opportunities that come to us again and again until we are ready to be with “what is,” rather than how we think it should be.
Being with “what is” is just another way to describe the powerful act of acceptance. True acceptance in this sense is the ability to question your stories and the meanings about the situation at hand, and to suspend the interpretation you are having long enough to create a gap of awareness. On the occasion when you can suspend the need to know and accept what is showing up, the opening is created where all transformation comes from. Divine intelligence within you is doing its best to give you what you most need to answer the call of the soul as it heads home. Something is showing up that may not look like what you expected, but practicing acceptance brings you to the moment and dissolves all expectations, so you can experience life fully just as it is.
Somewhere along the way you have asked for more self awareness, or for more spiritual clarity, or perhaps more loving relationships. To accept, means to accept that your highest good, or the power of your intent which comes from these desires you have stated, is unfolding right there in front of you. To understand the power that you have when you ask from your deepest desire is to begin to understand what then has to show up in your life: everything that is an obstacle to the desire or intent you have expressed! These seeming obstacles are simply the opportunity for you to choose again in favor of your desired intent. It is part of the perfectly unfolding plan to bring into manifestation the content of your heart’s desire. Your heart’s desire is the silent working of the soul as it calls you home. To practice acceptance is the way we can most honor ourselves as powerful creators aligned with the God-force of pure potential.
Toltec Wisdom: Mastering Authenticity
- May 14, 2009
We are masters because we have the power to create. We are creating in every moment, and the magic tool we use for creation is the word, the words that we use with ourselves and with other people; the words that we use to describe ourselves and the world around us. Our power to create is so strong that whatever we believe comes true. But what is it that we have created? What is it that we have mastered? This question is easy to answer by simply looking at our lives. What is present in your life right now is the result of what you have mastered. Is your life filled with happiness, friendship, and abundance or have you limited your creation with beliefs and concepts that limit the flow of these things?
When we awaken and have the courage to see our lives and everything that we have created, we can reclaim our power as the creator. As self-realized creators we can take responsibility for our creation, the same way that an artist can create a new work of art. This new creation begins with honesty and by looking closely at the beliefs we have about ourselves. Once we do this, we begin to notice that the words we use silently within our own mind are the most powerful words of all, for it is with these words that we manifest everything.
Recovering the authentic self is a process of unlearning the beliefs and habits that define who we think we are in order to become who we truly are. The authentic self creates from our true feelings, and our feelings are the basis of our integrity. To live from our integrity is to know that we are choosing the beliefs we will create from, and we use the emotions as the barometer for this choice. Our emotions are the messages from the authentic self. They are ever present and always speaking to us, but we interpret our emotions through our beliefs and often judge and reject them.
When we become aware, we can see that every thought and belief has an emotional response. If we find our emotions to be uncomfortable or out of balance, we simply need to look at what we believe about ourselves in order to bring our emotions into a new light. There is no such thing as a negative emotion; it is only our judgments about the emotion that causes a negative reaction. We can learn to master our emotions by mastering our thoughts and words so that we can arrive at a newfound respect for the emotional body. Mastering new words of self-love will allow the emotional body to feel wonderful!
It is your true nature to express from love because you are Love. When you learn how to do this, you become the creator of a masterpiece; you become a master of choice. When you live this truth, every action will only produce happiness, abundance and the absolute fulfillment of who you are.
A synthesis of ancient shamanic healing and modern technique based in Toltec Wisdom, form the heart of the teachings of Rita Rivera. Obama Asks Spiritual Leaders for Recommendations in these Uncertain Times
- April 17, 2009
We knew that Obama was different. Now we have some real evidence. His adminsitration is turning to spiritual leaders for recommendations on how to take action in these uncertain times. We can show our aupport but signing their petition to show we support the changes they have recommended.
The Obama Administration has asked the “Evolutionary Leaders” to communicate about what is transpiring on the planet, and how we can change the course of the unprecedented events that are challenging this planet. This is a window of opportunity that must be taken! A deadline was given for this information to be conveyed to the Obama Administration.
The Evolutionary Leaders like Deepak Chopra, Gregg Braden, Michael Beckwith and many, many others, gathered together to write up the information to present to the Obama Administration. They are also asking us to sign a petition to show the Administration how many people are in favor for these changes to occur. They need 10,000 signatures. We need your help to reach that number and beyond! Below is the information presented to the New Administration.

By the Evolutionary Leaders
The human family is in the midst of the most significant transformation of consciousness since its emergence in Africa over one hundred thousand years ago. Consciousness has been evolving for billions of years from the first cell to us. We are becoming aware that through our own consciousness the universe can know itself. This awareness reveals incredible new potential for our individual and collective humanity.
Simultaneously, we are the first species on this Earth aware that we can destroy ourselves by our own action. This may be the greatest wake-up call to the evolution of consciousness since the origin of Homo Sapiens. We now realize that we are affecting our own evolution by everything we do. This knowledge awakens in us the aspiration to become more conscious through subjective practices including meditation, reflection, prayer, intuition, creativity, and conscious choice making that accelerate our evolution in the direction of unity consciousness and inspire us to deeply align our collective vision.
THE CHALLENGE
At this juncture in human history, urgent global crises challenge us to learn to live sustainably, in harmony and gratitude with one another and with the living universe. The changes required of humanity are broad, deep, and far reaching. Only by acting swiftly and creatively can we birth a planetary culture that will bring well-being to every form of life in the Earth community. The good news is that a compelling new story of our potential as a whole human species is emerging-a story of collaboration, citizen action, dialogue and new understandings propelled by unprecedented levels of democratic freedom, multicultural exchange, and access to communication technologies. It is nothing less than the story of our
collective evolution.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ACTION
We recognize that the inner and outer aspects of life evolve together. A dramatic awakening in consciousness will involve an equally dramatic shift in outward aspects of our lives. In particular, we see the following as vital opportunities for our conscious evolution, both personally and collectively:
Cultivating a Paradigm of Aliveness: We regard the universe as deeply alive and conscious by nature. In a living universe, our sense of subtle connection and participation with life around us is the basis for a compassionate and cooperative approach to living.
Educating for an Evolving Consciousness: Awakening consciousness is the foundation for all the change we seek to see in the world. We can work to elevate our capacity for conscious reflection and creative action in our personal lives as well as our collective lives as communities. We must support research and educational strategies that optimize human capacities and explore the nature of consciousness.
Restoring Ecological Balance: The balance of planetary ecosystems is fundamental to our survival. We must reverse the pollution of our global commons-the water, air and soil that nourish all life. We must encourage the proliferation of clean, renewable energy sources and expend all necessary resources toward mitigating the effects of climate change.
Encouraging Conscious Media: We must find innovative ways to use the new electronic media as the mirror of our positive evolutionary story, investing in their capacity to reach across differences of generation, culture, religion, wealth, and gender to build a working consensus about our collective future.
Engaging in Social and Political Transformation: More sustainable ways of living will require the support of a more conscious democracy and vibrant civil society from which more enlightened leaders will emerge. All individuals should be encouraged to use their gifts to create participatory, responsible and compassionate models of governance.
Working for Integrity in Commerce: Conscious businesses that are aware of the scope, depth, and long-range impacts of their actions are key to achieving sustainability. Business must become an ethical steward of the Earth’s ecology and consciously establish an economic basis for a future of equitably shared abundance.
Promoting Health and Healing: The science of mind-body-spirit health has demonstrated the profound connection between the health of a whole person and the health of the system in which he or she lives. Whole systems healing, respecting both traditional knowledge and modern sciences, must be supported in physical, social, and spiritual domains.
Building Global Community: The new story is about all of us who share this planet. Together, we can create a culture of peace that eliminates the need for armed conflict, respecting and appreciating the glorious diversity of our human family.
YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VITAL
Our group has done its best to articulate possibilities for the evolution of consciousness at this crucial moment in time. Please reflect on this document, feel what resonates in your being and calls forth a response on your part. We invite you to discuss it with others, continuing this global conversation by adding to it the wisdom that is uniquely your own.. Together, let us co-create a new narrative of conscious evolution that is a call to individual and collective action, birthing the most significant transformation of consciousness in history. Jo in in the Call to Conscious Evolution by signing the pledge now.

Movies With A Master

Movies With A Master
I am a Dreamer and I am dreaming all the time. Often I find that my dream can be enhanced by stepping into someone else’s dream to observe the way they interpret life as they share their unique point of view. The men and women who make movies are the quintessential dreamers, desiring to share their dream, their perspective and their story with all of us. They make it possible for us to experience life from many points of view and through many eyes and to step outside of our well- worn interpretive track, into something full of surprise and wonder.
When I was new to the Toltec path and practicing deconstructing my belief structure, very often, my own well trained and ubiquitous programmed mind would pitch a fit. Understanding, that a programmed mind in reaction is a no- win situation, I would take myself off to see a movie, my logic being, “I am so tired of my own story might as well go and observe somebody else’s story and get a much needed break.” You see, I was trained by a master movie-goer, one who understood the full ramifications of sitting in the dark and letting go of a familiar reality in exchange for something completely new. Don Miguel Ruiz was such a master.
I used to have opinions about the type of movies I watched, no violence, no horror, no “stupid” comedies, only movies “with a message and of social and cultural importance.” Yes my friends, that was my program talking, set to the personal importance function. So when I started going to matinees with don Miguel, my training as his apprentice reached new levels of intensity. I remember objecting strongly to going to a war-like, dark, violent movie with him. As he was purchasing the tickets, he was nodding his head and smiling as though he was actually listening to my objections about why I could not possibly ever agree to see this movie with him.
Next thing I knew, we are sitting in the dark and men with spears and dark grotesque masks appeared on the screen, grunting and running each other through with these spears. Blood was every where. My hands moved quickly to cover my eyes, my breathing became shallow, my body became rigid. Very gently, I heard him whisper in my ear in his endearing Mexican accent, “What’s the matter sweetheart, it’s only a dream, it’s not real…open your eyes, take a look, is just a movie.” Slowly the hands came off my eyes, my shoulders relaxed and I looked into his eyes and I saw that he was not reacting to the movie at all. There he was sitting next to me, fully in control of what he was experiencing and still with the adorable smile on this face.
So, I listened , as he instructed me how to observe the movie. I began to detach from the images in front of me. I watched the movie but at the same time I detached from the movie…thinking to myself, this is just a dream…..this is just a movie…it isn’t real. What is real right now is how I am feeling in this moment. What my eyes were seeing was no longer affecting what my body was feeling. I had control over what I was perceiving, because I had awareness and directed my interpretation of what I was observing, consequently, I could maintain “my happy place” watching the most horrendous battles on the screen.
Of course I have my preferences for certain types of movies and I rarely choose now to see a violent movie, but I learned so much about my awareness as I sat in the dark with Miguel and what it means to be awake in this dream while observing another dream at the same time. I learned how not to let my emotions take a story or images and use them to get emotional food from my body. I observed the power of story to capture and direct my attention and practice the art of choice in the moment. Most of all I learned how to observe the “movie of my life” with awareness, taking the events much less personally. Once when I had consented to see what I thought was a truly stupid movie that I assumed was a total waste of my time, Miguel asked me to see the movie “through his eyes” and I don’t remember ever laughing so hard at a film. That experience showed me how so often my opinions are a waste of my time, and generally interfere with my enjoyment of life.
Toltecs have an ancient ceremony called the Mitote, some of you may have experienced such a ceremony, and in the modern day version, watching a movie with one’s fellow Mitote participants, is a vital part of the all night ceremony. It is thought to prepare the mind to detach from taking what it observes so personally and move closer to that magical state of the willing suspension of disbelief that can be a doorway to deeper levels of our dreaming mind. Perhaps this is how I became so fond of the movie experience, equating it with the potential to be opened and moved by the magic of images, music and my imagination.
As we move into the dark part of winter and cold nights keep us at home snuggled up on our couches, I thought I would share a list of movies with you that I have especially enjoyed. It is likely that each has something to say about this mysterious and often wild ride called life. These movies have the potential to moves us closer to understanding what it means to have a dreaming mind and be aware of how our dreams are all connected. I am dreaming. You are dreaming. We are all dreaming and sometimes it is so pleasurable just to rent the DVD and lay back and observe another, ever changing and shifting dream.

LIFF Mastery- Laughter Is For Free
- October 23, 2008
From the creative mind of Dreamer Sylvia Madrigal, comes this idea for how to roll with the changes.
Let’s start a grass roots movement, Laugher Is For Free, LIFF Mastery!
Each of us commits to committing a LIFF act every day, once a week, once a month, or whenever.
A LIFF act has 2 criteria:
1. It must be absolutely free (it does not cost anything to execute)
2. It must bring joy to yourself to another, to the earth, to an animal, to the deceased, to any being we choose.
That’s it. We can create LIFF nights when we gather in our communities for people to talk about their LIFF acts or create them on the spot; or they can blog about it on the LIFF Mastery (Life Mastery Programs) site. We can have performances in which people come together to make each other laugh: we can email friends and family and inspire them to commit LIFF acts too.
Let’s make LIFF go viral! If the Empire of Greed is falling, let’s replace it with an empire of laughter.
Because after all Laughter Is For Free… and can be had in absolute abundance.
Please take up Sylvia’s invitation and start the laughter and then email us the results, or comment below. We are also looking for more suggestions on ways to spread the laughter, so send us your ideas on what works.
I Change My Thoughts, I Change the Emotional Quality of My World
- May 04, 2008
Mastering life is the process by which we become aware of how thought and belief have the power to manifest. We can begin practicing self awareness by observing the thoughts and beliefs that we are using to create the interpretation of what the world brings us. After all, thoughts and beliefs are the raw material we use to craft our daily experience of life. While a thought is not real and it does not have substance, it is still very powerful. Choosing which thoughts we will continue to support or which thoughts we begin to challenge is the first step in crafting our lives as a masterpiece of art.
As we perceive the world, it might seem as though the world determines how we will interpret what we are experiencing. This is an erroneous belief. By taking responsibility for choosing how you perceive and interpret the world at large is a big step in changing the quality of your life. The power comes from the choice. But how can we begin to exercise this power? Learning to choose a new interpretation of events in your life is where practicing the art of choice becomes most apparent and the rewards are the greatest.
We have accepted many collective agreements about how an experience should be interpreted. All we have to do is look to the media, conversations with co-workers, family or friends, and there are ready-made interpretations of everything that is going on in our lives – with both personal and global events. Opinions are freely shared. Soon we are agreeing with how someone else is seeing an event without ever asking ourselves “Is this how I see this situation? Is there another way to interpret this? Does the way I’m looking at this circumstance contribute to creating happiness and overcoming fear in my life?”
These collectively shared interpretations often come from a very limited and fearful point of view. These days there is much uncertainty in the events of the world - war, hurricanes, rising gas prices. And that uncertainty is creating a lot of fearful stories and reactions. If we respond with fear to what is happening globally, we are not making the best choice on our own behalf. When we create fearful conclusions and stories to what we are presented with, we give this type of energy to our lives. This energy creates the emotional quality that then colors our existence. Our combined fearful responses have the power to manifest the very circumstances that frightens us. The results are that we feel helpless and powerless in a constantly changing world. This is how we lose our happiness.
The power to challenge the interpretation of what our mind says about current events, whether personal or global, comes from exercising the power of choice. First, we use our awareness to see how we are interpreting an event. If the story we choose creates anxiety or distress in the body, or steals our happiness, we can decide to withdraw our agreement and support of it. Consciously choosing our interpretation means that we begin to challenge the old existing points of view. These old points of view usually reflect our lack of faith in the divine order of life or our lack of faith in our own resilience. By making an active choice about how we want to tell our story actually changes the quality of our life experience.
- To re-interrupt simply means to ask yourself a few important questions. In other words, you question that voice of authority in your head.
- What is the story you are telling? How are you interpreting what is happening now (or what had happened before)?
- Can you believe that this is absolutely true?
- How does it make you feel?
- What if you don’t believe your interpretation? How do you feel then?
Taking a few moments to become aware of what is going on in the internal dialogue in our minds, and then questioning that dialogue to see if a new choice or interpretation is possible, results in shifting our awareness. The simple action of consistently observing the process of thinking will begin to transform the way we think. This then results in a new experience, or sensation in our bodies – potentially one of more peace, joy, and happiness.
Emotions that enhance our experience of life come from our truest, most authentic self. This is the part of us that is accessed when we rely less on thought and more on feeling. Love, or the experience of being one with what created us, results in an enhanced emotional experience of life. We are interacting with that force all the time. What brings us our greatest happiness is our allowing that love to have a clear channel to flow out of us and into the world that we are creating. This is only possible when we challenge our fearful stories and choose to not believe everything we think. While we may not have control over the events occurring in the outer world, we certainly do have the ability to choose our response to it with awareness.
The Sacred Gift of Planet Earth
- May 01, 2008
Many prophecies exist within the native and sacred traditions of the world relating to this time in the evolutionary process of mankind. These prophecies are a call to get our attention and awaken us to the challenge of what we are creating with our dreaming minds. The Ancient Toltec’s and their teaching’s spoke to this transformative time as one when it is possible to awaken to our true spiritual origins, to live from a place of power, reflecting the infinite spirit of Creator and restoring a sacred relationship with all that is living.
We look around at what our species is creating on this planet and witness the consequences of centuries of living without awareness and respect for the living essence of our home planet, but in actuality the manner in which humans treat the earth simply reflects the way we regard our human bodies - the homes of our spirit. The programmed mind, or the old fear based structure of beliefs is being challenged as we become aware of the call to healing. We are beginning to see that we can not proceed in the same way as we have for so long and it is our very way of thinking and interpreting that is in need of transformation. It is clear that our thinking mind has taken the reins and made reason and the realm of the intellect the focus of what is important to us as a species, resulting in a disregard for our feeling nature or what the heart is conveying. We have become dissociated from our bodies, and consequently the body of earth that sustains our lives.
There is an old myth about a kingdom that has fallen under siege of dark forces. The rightful King has been exiled by the illegitimate King, who has claimed the land and the people as his by force and used them to do his corrupt bidding. Under the illegitimate King’s rein, the kingdom has become impoverished and depleted of its wealth. All efforts of the king’s men and all of the money in the coffers have been directed toward warfare, while the health and well-being of the citizens is sacrificed in this drive to conquer. Then a miracle occurs. The true King is freed from his captivity. He returns to his kingdom, overthrows the evil ruler, and begins to restore and regenerate the abused populace and their lands. A new day of revival and celebration arrives and the people rejoice and demonstrate the love and respect they have for this brave and benevolent leader who overcame the tyranny of the wrongful King.
It is easy to first relate this story to what is going on in the world from a political and ecological point of view but I want to draw the parallel much, much closer to home - to the relationship you are experiencing between your intellect and the feeling aspect of you - your heart, residing in your body and being the center of feeling and sensation. For it is really not so different.
The wrongful king in this little story is where you have come from, the tyranny of the mind and all its distorted concepts and values… a dream of an old structure where power is misdirected and the true power of love and integrity have been exiled. And then something happens. An awakening, in which you know for certain, from the core of your being that you were put on this earth for something much greater and you no longer are willing to abide this ache in your heart, or the powerlessness you feel inside, or the hollow feeling that you just can’t endure anymore. Your heart slowly awakens to the call of the possibility of discovering itself and its inherent integrity. You may have noticed there is an increased desire to interact from the core of your being and have that level of authentic connection with others. As the desires are ignited, the search begins. The search within for your own integrity, living exiled in your heart while the old ruler of thought, judgment and opinion directed your life. This questioning of your life and its meaning then may lead you to question the choices you have made in the past. And it is here in this process of questioning and seeking new answers that the road home to your heart and the balance you are seeking makes itself known.
This myth of the two Kings now becomes a metaphor for the impetus to seek within yourself the end of mental tyranny and the opening to seek the balance of what comes from the heart’s desire to live in peace, love and beauty. The desire to create a better world, begins with becoming aware of the quality of relationship you are having with your own physical being. Just as the body is the divine matter that houses your soul, the planet houses the soul of mankind. As you embody self respect, self acceptance, and willingness to allow the expression of feeling sensations in your body without judgment, your relationship first with yourself transforms and then extends to all living things.
The awakening that the prophecies say is possible during this time can be best stated as the awakening to Life. In this process we become aware of what thoughts and beliefs and their consequences have wrought not only upon the earth but also within our own human matter – the physical body. To awaken really means, in action, that we respect all living things as divine emanations made into form and that light is the basic building block of all living things including our bodies. So because all matter is made of light,
we are essentially connected by the same force, makes all living things connected as one.
It is an exciting time to be alive! A time filled with the potential for a renewed sense of responsibility for what we are creating with the collective human mind as we live on this sacred planet. The opportunity to become aware of the power of our thoughts and beliefs in manifesting the quality of our lives and the quality of the health of our beloved home. We have the choice to awaken and create from our true essence, which is love or to continue down the path of living the effects of our dream of fear. We can have an effect on the healing of planet earth. Restoring harmony and balance in the world begins within the heart of each individual.
